JUDGING pathway

This pathway equips you to become an ABPS-accredited judge for bodybuilding and physique sports, trained to apply category criteria with precision, uphold competition integrity, and align with international best practices.

Step 1 : ABPS Portfolio ASSESSMENT

All prospective judges must demonstrate:

  • Experience in bodybuilding or physique sports as an athlete, coach, or event official.

  • Familiarity with competition categories and stage presentation standards.

  • A commitment to fair and unbiased officiating.

Step 2: ABPS Judge Training

Attend the ABPS Judge Introduction Workshop, which covers:

  • Judging criteria for all WBPF-aligned categories (e.g., Bodybuilding, Classic Physique, Men’s Physique, Women’s Wellness).

  • Scoring methodology for pre-judging and finals.

  • Pose assessment and comparison rounds.

Qualification requirement: Pass the ABPS Judge Practical Assesment with a minimum 80% accuracy.

Step 3: Practical Assessment – Provisional Judge

After passing the theory exam, you will serve as a Provisional Judge at the next available ABPS-sanctioned event. During the practical stage, you must:

  • Judge under supervision alongside the official panel.

  • Achieve a minimum 80% accuracy in your placements compared to the panel average.

  • Demonstrated consistency in applying criteria for muscularity, symmetry, conditioning, and presentation across all divisions.

  • Demonstrate professionalism and adherence to judging protocols throughout the event.

Step 4: ABPS Judge accreditation

Upon meeting both theory and practical requirements, you will:

  • Be awarded ABPS Judge Accreditation, valid for three years.

  • Be eligible to officiate at all ABPS-sanctioned events.

  • Listing in the official ABPS “Find a Judge” directory, giving you visibility to event organisers and the bodybuilding community.

  • Maintain accreditation by judging at least one ABPS event within the three-year validity and attending an ABPS Judges Refresher Workshop.

Step 5: Progression to International Judging

Accredited ABPS Judges who have:

  • Officiated at a minimum of two ABPS events within three years, and

  • Maintained consistent scoring accuracy and professional conduct.

… may be nominated by ABPS to attend an international judging seminar (e.g., ABBF, WBPF) to obtain International Judge Certification.
