Our Background
ABPS may be a new kid on the block as our application was approved for registration by the Registry of Societies (ROS) only recently, to be precise on 7 January 2020.
However, our roots can be traced as far back as 1962 when the Singapore Bodybuilding and
Fitness Federation (SBBF) was formed. SBBF was helmed by Datuk Paul Chua from 1978 to
2005. He was its Secretary from 1973 to 1978. Young we may be but we have roots that latched
us firmly and strongly to the long and rich history of the sports of bodybuilding in Singapore, the
region and the world over.
ABPS is built around a group of committed, dedicated and passionate members. Our executive
committee members come from diverse racial and professional backgrounds; offering a slew of
experiences, strengths and knowledge.
ABPS is helmed and advised by some of the biggest names in bodybuilding. Our Advisor is none
other than the President of the World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (WBPF) and
Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (ABBF), Datuk Paul Chua. And our
President, Mr Letchmenon s/o Mariappan, is no stranger to the local, regional and international
sports scenes.
This combination makes ABPS a formidable team to bring back the glory days of bodybuilding
to Singapore and even bring our beloved sports to a new height. Our affiliation with regional and
international federations will open the paths for our members and athletes to compete at
international levels.
The sports of bodybuilding in Singapore grew at a phenomenal rate for several decades under
the able leadership of Datuk Chua. During its heyday in the 80s, bodybuilding produced
champions after champions at regional and world stages.
Champions like Rohmat Juraimi, Fatholomein Ali, Azman Abdullah, Abdul Halim Haron, Ibrahim
Sihat, Simon Chua, Vincent Ng, Augustine Lee, Agnes Lee and many more painted the town
red. They put the name of our tiny island nation on the map, ruled the sports for decades and
most importantly, flew the red and white Singapore flag with pride.
Rohmat's success story was legendary. His accomplishments include the 1973 Overall
Champion Mr Asia and a 6th position for the World Championships.
Fatholomein or Fathol is best remembered as one of the best posers of our bodybuilding. His
posing flawless and put many of us in awe. Fathol brought pride to the nation by winning several
regional championships.
Perhaps the best bodybuilder ever produced by Singapore was Azman. He was the only
Singaporean to have won the title of Mr Universe. He had four other prestigious gold medals
under his belt in 1993. Azman's strengths in terms of the size and thickness of his muscles are
best remembered until today by his fellow bodybuilders and fans.
Can we recreate history? ABPS is confident we could. We were elated when we received the
approval from ROS. We kept telling ourselves that we could now move as a legitimate
organisation to promote the sports and develop as well as nurture budding athletes to become
champions.
But ABPS is under no illusion that this can be easily achieved. It will take hard work, team work,
proper planning, and of course sweat and blood to revive and bring the glory days of bodybuilding
and physique sports.
We cannot do this all by ourselves. We need you, all of you, our members, affiliates, sponsors,
well-wishers to walk with us to unfold a new chapter in the sports.
ABPS firmly believes that an affiliation with the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC)
could help us achieve our mission to develop the sports of bodybuilding and physique sports
among Singaporeans of all races, age groups and gender. In fact, this is an integral part of our
mission to provide various platforms for our athletes and members to compete at various national
and international levels.
In recent years, we have been sending athletes to compete in various Southeast Asian, Asian
and World Championships in the past few years and are pleased to share with you that they
have brought honours to our beloved Singapore. Our next target is to work with SNOC to send
our athletes to the next SEA Games in Vietnam in 2021.
ABPS cannot possibly chart a future or achieve our plans without any form of support or affiliation
from SNOC. We are confident that an affiliation with SNOC would not only strengthen our resolve
to rebuild the sports of bodybuilding in Singapore but also bring it to greater heights and fly the
Singapore flag high.
We will take a leap of faith and try to emulate our past achievements. It will not be easy and take
lots of sweat, blood and sacrifice but we can achieve it.
Jiayo, Majulah Singapura.
